Air Force – Navy Rivalry in the Air – The Fastest Jet

Posted in Aviation News

The Air Force and Navy have a (usually) friendly rivalry about who is the most competent in the air.  Sometimes the rivalry is settled by facts (but not usually).  This case was settled by fact, using the case of the fastest jet.

A friend shared a video with me on Wednesday that I want to share with Doctor Aviation followers.  It is priceless.  In the video, an unknown pilot tells a great story quite well.  A few comments and then I will let the story teller take over.

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was developed in the 1960s.  We touch on the aircraft in Doctor Aviation Session 6 when we discuss Kelly Johnson, who designed the jet.  The Blackbird was used for reconnaissance for decades.  It exact specifications were classified.  All that was shared was that the service ceiling with 60,000 feet plus (I was surprised to hear the figure shared in the following video) and the airspeed was reported to be Mach 3 Plus (with the emphasis on Plus).  That is over three times the speed of sound folks.

So sit right back and hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip…  https://www.facebook.com/JamesHCartwright/videos/10211856230978847/
